For many people, their favorite part of the day is checking their phone for any new text messages. Texting has become a common way to communicate with friends, family members and coworkers. However, if you ever find yourself in court over something that happened on text message—whether it be divorce proceedings or a criminal charge—the last thing you want is to have those messages disappear into thin air when it’s time to show them off in court. Fortunately, there are some basic steps you can take before an issue arises so that your texts are always safe and ready for viewing at any time:
You should be able to call up your text messages in court with a few taps.

You can save your texts with an app on your phone or online using a website.
To record text message using an app on your phone or online using a website, you’ll have to save them in two places, but this will make them accessible from anywhere. The first step is to download an app that allows you to save text conversations and messages (like iMessage). Once installed and set up, open the app and find the message thread you want saved. Tap on it and then tap “Archive” at the bottom right corner of your screen. This will create an archive file containing all of those messages–you can find it under “Archived Messages” in Settings>Storage & iCloud Usage>.
If there’s no way for you access these files while offline (and since they’re going into court), then consider using another option: Google Drive! It’s free storage space with unlimited bandwidth so long as it doesn’t go over 5GB per month (which shouldn’t happen).
You know when you’re going to court, so make sure you’ve archived everything that could be important beforehand.
- Make sure you have copies of your text messages saved in two places, ideally on your phone and an online storage service. This way, if anything happens to one of the copies, you’ll still have another one.
- If possible, make sure that both versions can be accessed from anywhere so that if something happens while you’re away from home or on vacation (or even if someone steals your phone), they won’t be able to delete either version of the text messages.
When archiving your text messages, make sure they are saved in two places and that they’re both accessible from anywhere.
How to archive text messages? Make sure they are saved in two places and that they’re both accessible from anywhere.
- Make sure you have a backup of your text messages.
- Make sure you can access them from any device (phone, tablet, computer).
- Make sure they’re stored in a way that is safe and secure–this might mean using an app or service like Google Drive or Dropbox to store them online so if something happens to one device the other will still be there for you!
It’s easy to archive old text messages and keep them safe
- Save your text messages in two places
- One place should be accessible from anywhere, and the other should be a backup location for when the first one isn’t available. This way, if you lose access to one of those locations, you still have a copy of your texts saved somewhere else.
- Make sure you have a backup for everything else too!
If something happens to our phones or computers (or even if we just want to switch things up), it’s important that we have backups of our data so we can easily move on with our lives without missing anything important like old text messages from the past few years that are now relevant again because they contain evidence in court cases against others who may try getting away with crimes by hiding behind technicalities such as “It wasn’t me.”
